Anna Carmela Sagcal Gironella, MD

Dr. Gironella has specific clinical interest in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, while her academic interests focus on the variability of treatment response to immunosuppressant medications in patients with rheumatic diseases as well as the characterization of patients with very early onset of lupus and other autoimmune diseases. She has served as site investigator in phase 3 clinical trials of a novel therapeutic agent in juvenile idiopathic arthritis. In addition to being board-certified in pediatric rheumatology, Dr. Gironella also has a masters degree in pharmaceutical sciences with specialization in drug development.
Philosophy of Care
I firmly believe in engaging and encouraging our patients in active participation in their care, as well as partnering with the family in our common goal of improving patient outcomes and quality of life. The philosophy that no two patients are alike in their condition and response to treatment guides not only how we form the patient's treatment plan but also guides my academic and clinical research endeavors. These are truly exciting times to be a pediatric rheumatologist, as our field continues to move forward towards personalized medicine! Hopefully, we are closer to tailoring children's treatment, so they receive highly targeted and effective medications with minimal, if any, side effects.
