Shabbar F. Danish, M.D., FAANS is a board-certified neurosurgeon and chair of Neurosurgery at the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Instistute at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. In this role Dr. Danish works to enhance and expand services for adults needing neurosurgical care, especially for patients with brain and spine tumors, Parkinson’s and other movement disorders, epilepsy, and facial pain.
Dr. Danish has more than 13 years of experience providing care for patients, specializing in craniotomy, MRI guided laser therapy, deep brain stimulation, resection for epilepsy, neuromodulation for epilepsy, microvascular decompression, and laminectomy for resection of spinal tumors.
Dr. Danish has pioneered techniques for deep brain stimulation and MRI guided laser therapy for inoperable brain tumors, making him an internationally renowned expert. Dr. Danish also specializes in two innovative technologies: high intensity focused ultrasound and ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® with Synaptive Brain Only Silent MRI. Focused ultrasound is a minimally invasive alternative to deep brain stimulation for patients with essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease tremor that has not responded to medications. ZAP-X is an alternative to brain surgery and conventional types of radiation therapy. Integrating Synaptive MRI technology with ZAP-X, an option only available at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, offers real-time, point-of-care imaging feedback to physicians to ensure therapeutic success.
Dr. Danish attended medical school at UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed his residencies in general surgery and neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete two research fellowships in bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and Neurophysiology at Hospital Nacional de Paraplejicos. Additionally, he completed two fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania in Movement Disorder and Epilepsy Surgery, and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. Dr. Danish previously served as Professor of Neurosurgery, Director of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, Medical Director of the Gamma Knife Center, and Associate Program Director for the neurosurgery residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.
As seen through his research and academic experience, Dr. Danish is dedicated to the advancement of his field. He has served as the principal investigator on multiple studies, authored multiple publications which have been cited over one hundred times, and has been invited to speak at events around the world. He also holds a patent on a clinical software algorithm.
Along with membership in national and international professional organizations, Dr. Danish holds several leadership positions including Vice Chair of Congress of Neurological Surgery, Stereotactic and Functional Section, and is on the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Executive Board of Directors. Notable awards include the Shining Star Award from the American Cancer Society and being invited to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ with Mazur Robotics.
