Matthew Counihan, M.D., M.S., is a board eligible, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He is part of the practice Orthopedic Specialists of New Jersey, which is affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center. Prior to joining HMH, Dr. Counihan completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine, where he also served as a Clinical Instructor.
Dr. Counihan treats athletes at all levels and makes it a priority to evaluate all treatment options prior to performing surgery. When surgery is required, Dr. Counihan combines his clinical expertise with the latest research and technologies to achieve the best possible outcome, and is supported by an expert surgical care team. His passion for sports medicine started when he sustained a serious cartilage and ACL injury playing high school football. His experience as a patient gave him an early appreciation for the importance of maximizing the health of joints and optimizing outcomes after injury.
Dr. Counihan is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. He has contributed to the literature of orthopedic surgery by publishing numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and has delivered lectures and presentations at national conferences.
